OIL ON CANVAS 31'' X 24''. Samuel Swan Walker(1806-1848), Ohio. A portrait of a seated woman. Inscribed on the verso: ''By S.S.Walker, Feb.23, 1844, restored June 1923, Thas A.Lee''. Studied: mostly self-taught; later a pupil and close friend of J. Insco Williams (see entry) in Richmond (IN). Exhibited: Soc. for Promotion of Useful Knowledge, Cincinnati, OH , 1841(four miniatures). Work: Ohio Hist. Soc., Columbus, OH, has a collection of material related to Walker, including a sketch for a miniature of John Insco Williams (1841), a pen and wash genre scene (1846), a sketch for the title page of a notebook (1826), and the Walker Family Papers which includes sketchbooks and letters from Samuel Walker to his wife, describing each place he visited and the people he painted; the Historic Southwest Ohio, Inc. owns a portrait in oil of Thomas Laws (1844). Placed in a very nice carved gilded frame. More info in the white binder.
