Well abraded from use, this is a more typical version of the rare 884 THOUS Assay Office $20 gold Territorial issue. The reason so few of these are round today is that much of the issue later was melted at the opening of the U.S. Mint in San Francisco. Much of the territorial gold emerged from the mint as shiny new double eagles in 1854-70 before the gold fields were played out. An unusual find for the collector, this traces to the shipwreck of the S. S. Central America off the Carolina coast in 1857. (SSCA 7052)
