HARZFELD, / NUMISMATIST. / 1713 PARK AVENUE, PHILADELPHIA, PA. / RARE AND ANTIQUE COINS, MEDALS, NUMISMATIC BOOKS, ETC., / BOUGHT, SOLD AND EXCHANGED. / HARZFELD’S NUMISMATIC CIRCULAR. / COPIES SENT ON APPLICATION, ON RECEIPT OF STAMP. / CORRESPONDENCE SOLICITED. Wonderfully preserved. Uncirculated. Lot also includes Harzfeld’s business card listing the same Philadelphia address, which has been updated by hand to give his address in Wiesbaden, Germany. Folded and a bit worn. Two interesting pieces of ephemera from this intriguing 19th-century coin dealer. The note is beautifully printed. Harzfeld was only active in the U.S. for three and a half years (1877-81) before poor health led him to retire to his native Germany, where he died in 1883. According to Adams, “Harzfeld’s descriptions of European as well as ancient pieces are authoritative.” Harzfeld’s Numismatic Circular only appeared in two issues, dated April and July 1877, giving us some idea of the date of the first item.
