Invitation from President and Mrs. Rutherford B. Hayes dated 24 February 1881 on Executive Mansion stationery to Lewis E. Payson, Representative from Illinois. Hayes would leave the White House the following month after only one term as a result of agreeing to the Compromise of 1877 which settled that year's contentious election in his favor. 5.5'' x 7.75'' invitation, folded to fit into two accompanying envelopes, has some separation along folds. Overall toning and light soiling, else very good.
