Partly-printed DS as president, signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 17 x 14, January 24, 1881. President Hayes appoints P. Henry Carpenter to the position of Postmaster at South Bridge, Massachusetts. Signed at the conclusion by Hayes, and countersigned by Postmaster General Horace Maynard. Intersecting mailing folds, some scattered light toning from seal over signature, as well as a bit of other scattered light toning and creasing, otherwise fine condition. The document retains its gold foil seal, which is slightly worn and creased, with its red ribbon still attached.
