ALS, one page, 5.5 x 8.5, April 6, 1889. In a letter to Edward Bok, editor of the Ladies Home Journal, Hayes writes, in part: “With pleasure I try to comply with the request in yours of the 4th instant. You send two blank pieces of Bristol. I conjecture one was as a wrapper of the other. I hope it will not diminish the value of the souvenir, but the fact is, I was in Oregon Oct. 4, 1880—not in the Ex. Mansion for a month before and after that date. How it happened that you got the PO stamp of that date I don’t perceive.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and some light creasing. President Hayes’ tour of the West resulted in such positive receptions that he found himself immersed the crowds of Portland, Oregon and visiting several areas of the territory of Washington, which was not yet a state. These Western travels occupied his touring schedule until he made his way to the east coast in October of 1880.
