Early, partial ADS, signed within the text and at the conclusion, "R. B. Hayes," one page, 7.75 x 11.75, April 2, 1846. In his early days as an attorney, Hayes certifies a deposition document as a notary public. Hayes writes, in part: "I R. B. Hayes, a Notary Public within and for the county of Sandusky and state of Ohio, do hereby certify that the above named was by me appointed and the above named Benjamin Shawl, William Tracy, Jacob Stahl, N. W. Tracy, Jacob Weist"¦and William Caldwell were by me sworn to testify the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth and that the foregoing depositions"¦were taken at the time and place specified." The upper section and reverse are filled out in another hand, recording part of depositions referred to. In very good to fine condition, with light toning and splitting along the horizontal folds. After briefly reading law in Columbus, Ohio, Hayes moved east to attend Harvard Law School in 1843. Graduating with an LL.B, he was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1845 and opened his own law office. A scarce, early handwritten legal document by the future president.
