Rutherford B. Hayes autograph letter signed as President on executive mansion letterhead, dated 15 August 1879 from Hayes' residence in Windsor, Vermont. Letter, addressed to Secretary of State William M. Evarts, was written amid mounting tensions between Mexico and the United States regarding fraudulent claims made against Mexico by an American silver mining company. The Mexican government became irate when Hayes' administration refused to compensate Mexico for what it had already paid to the claimant. President Hayes, reacting to Mexico's outrage, here writes to Secretary Evarts: ''It seems to me desirable that the decision in Mexican Award Cases be given to Counsel immediately. Can't you dispatch me a syllabus? / R.B Hayes''. One-page letter, measuring 5.5'' x 9'', has significant staining on verso, else near fine.
