Rustic French Fireback

1673 Chateau Nievers

H=20, W=18 1/2

Originally, firebacks were used in fireplaces to radiate heat into the room. Now, in addition to use in fireplaces, they can also be used as ornamentation on stone walls, above stoves, or as an accessory.

This wonderful antique fireback from France depicts a Bishop with his crozier. To either side of him are the crosses of Lorraine. The detail at the bottom is indistinguishable. This would be a wonderful conversation piece for lovers of heraldy. The piece is in good antique condition. 18th Century.
