Commissioned by
Catherine the Great, designed by Etienne
Maurice Falconet and immortalized by
Pushkin, the monument of Peter I is one of the
most famous sculptures in the world. It was
also an impressive feat of engineering. The
granite base alone weighed 1800 metric tons
and was laboriously transported from the
Karelian interior to the Baltic coast on a
system of pulleys at the rate of one mile per
month. The casting took several more years
to perfect, and the Bronze Horseman was
finally unveiled on August 7,1782, on the
centenary of Peter?s accession to the throne.
