Russian School Oil Painting Moses
A compelling 19th-century religious oil painting attributed to the Russian School, depicting a solemn full-length portrait of Moses holding the tablets of the Law inscribed with Hebrew text. The biblical figure is shown in traditional garb, rendered in luminous tones of saffron and crimson, set against a stylized architectural backdrop with drapery and a tiled floor. The painting is executed on wood panel and housed in a richly carved and gilded frame of the period. The reverse bears an old label attributing the work to Russia, circa 1833, with the subject titled "Moses." This attribution is consistent with the technique and iconographic elements visible in the work, including the use of flattened space and jewel-toned pigments characteristic of early 19th-century Russian devotional painting. Panel dimensions approximately 17 inches long x 22 inches high. Frame shows expected age and wear with minor losses; painting exhibits some scattered craquelure and surface spotting, commensurate with age.

Issued: c. 1833
