Designed by Sergei Simonov in the 40’s, the SKS is a semi-automatic rifle renowned for its robust construction, reliability, and historical significance. It operates using a short-stroke gas piston system with a tilting bolt, a design that ensures consistent cycling and dependable performance under adverse conditions. Chambered in the 7.62x39mm cartridge, the SKS offers a balance of manageable recoil, effective range, and stopping power, making it a dependable firearm for military and civilian applications alike. Cartridges can be loaded into the integrated 10-round magazine via stripper clips, allowing for rapid reloading and efficient operation in both field and range settings. Iron sights, including an adjustable rear sight for elevation and a fixed front post for precision, allow for effective targeting at various distances. Its folding bayonet, a distinctive element of its design that underscores its original military purpose, provided soldiers with a versatile tool for close-quarters combat and utility tasks in the field. The rifle’s simplicity and ease of maintenance further enhance its appeal, as its design minimizes the need for complex disassembly while ensuring durability.
This 80th Anniversary Commemorative SKS, customized by BKG Custom, features a hardwood stock with laminated grain, expertly restored to highlight its natural auburn tones. The cosmoline has been extracted, and the wood has been treated with linseed oil and refinished in an oil-based semi-gloss urethane, achieving a finish that is both durable and visually stunning. The metal components, including the bayonet, have been restored to a brushed pearl finish and protected with Cerakote Ceramic Coating, ensuring long-lasting durability. All parts have matching serial numbers (AT 2171), except for the rear housing, and the rifle proudly retains various proof markings, including the Tula Factory star.
A custom buttstock cover crafted from antelope fur, stitched to full-grain distressed buffalo leather with a suede cheek rest, adds a unique and tactile aesthetic. The hand-tooled leather includes an oval window showcasing the iconic “Order of the Red Star” badge (Орден Красной Звезды), a prestigious Soviet military award for courage and bravery in battle. The upper handguard and forestock are also adorned with distressed leather, enhancing grip and aesthetics.
This rifle is housed in a custom-built display case designed to resemble a WWII-era rifle crate. The case is painted in army green and marked with the Cyrillic inscription “Самозарядный карабин Симонова, CKC” (Simonov Self-Loading Carbine, SKS). The front of the case is further embellished with the Two-Headed Eagle Coat of Arms of Russia. A built-in LED strip light, controlled via remote, illuminates the rifle inside the case, which can also be mounted on the wall for an impressive display.
This custom SKS rifle blends historical legacy with masterful craftsmanship, offering a truly unique and invaluable addition to any firearms collection.
