Russian Orthodox Icon of the Protection of the Mother of God on Wood
A traditional Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos (Pokrov), painted in tempera on a wood panel with kovcheg (a recessed central field). The icon portrays the Virgin Mary at the center, extending her veil in a gesture of intercession before a congregation of saints, bishops, angels, and holy figures. Christ is shown above in blessing, amidst a celestial mandorla, while below, scenes from sacred liturgy and saintly lives unfold in detailed registers. This finely detailed work reflects the stylistic conventions of 19th-century Russian iconography, with its vibrant palette of red, ochre, green, and black, accentuated by the worn gilding on halos and vestments. Inscriptions in Old Church Slavonic are visible in the upper corners, including the abbreviated title of the feast. The figures are presented in the traditional frontal, stylized manner, with elongated proportions and finely lined facial features. Presented on a hand-carved wooden panel measuring approximately 12 inches wide by 14 inches high. The reverse bears no additions or later modifications. Moderate surface wear, craquelure, and scattered paint loss, particularly at edges and high points, are consistent with age and devotional use. A moving devotional object and a beautiful example of Russian ecclesiastical art.
