Russian Lacquer Box, Palekh School, Winter Troika Scene
A lively Russian lacquer box of octagonal form, hand-painted in the Palekh tradition with a vivid winter troika scene. The imagery captures a three-horse sleigh racing past bright red cottages under a snowy night sky, with a warmly dressed driver and bundled passengers enjoying the ride. Executed in bold hues of red, green, yellow, and blue, the central tableau is bordered by a decorative gold vine motif that continues along the angled sides. The piece is signed in Cyrillic at the lower edge and identified as originating from Palekh, one of Russia's most esteemed lacquer miniature centers. The interior is finished in bright red lacquer, though the hinged edge has a significant area of loss, exposing the underlying papier-mache. Despite this, the artwork remains intact and visually compelling. This box offers a charming depiction of Russian village life and folklore, and although compromised structurally, it retains strong decorative appeal and collectible value.
