Politician (1836–1907) who served as Michigan governor, US senator, and as secretary of war during the administration of William McKinley. TLS signed “R. A. Alger,” one page, lightly-lined, 7.75 x 10, Michigan Executive Office letterhead, January 21, 1886. Alger writes Henry W. Moulton of Newberryport, Massachusetts. In part: “I think Mrs. L. ordered a cast of the arms, etc., for me which I presume will be forthcoming in due time? I am exceedingly grateful, for my part, for the work you have done in this matter. Mrs. Lunt’s Father and my Mother were brother and sister.” Alger had added “for me” in his own hand. Intersecting folds, uniform toning, scattered soiling, a few small pencil notations at the lower right corner, and the signature a shade light, otherwise fine condition.
