Rural Oak Telephone, Stamped D2848-L 446. Ca. 1890-early 1900s. Non-Dial version. Rural and other telephones that were not on a common battery exchange had a "magneto" or hand cranked generator to produce a high voltage alternating signal to ring the bells of other telephones on the line and to alert the operator. Plaque on front reads "Rural Telephone" and gives instructions on how to place a call. Paper schematic label inside door "Magneto Wall Phone (Handset type) Schematic P-25621 Issue I". Original Bakelite handset, brass bells, and crank. Hand crank magneto generator marked "Stromberg Carlson Co. Rochester NY USA" Oak Case dimensions: 19"H x 9 1/4" W x 5 1/2"D. Condition: Wood is in near perfect condition, cloth covered wires frayed, handset missing transmitter and receiver, wires disconnected.
