Austin, June 3, 1858. Broadside 58 x 47 cm. Elephant folio. Splitting neatly repaired along old folds with loss of some letters and words. Tissue backing professionally executed. Overall a very good or better copy for such a fragile piece.<BR><BR>"[Runnels] on August 5, 1855, he was elected lieutenant governor. In 1857, he became governor, defeating Sam Houston 38,552 votes to Houston's 23,628. Runnels was the only person ever to defeat Sam Houston in a political election."- Handbook of Texas. One listing Houston for Governor on the first line of the ticket and the second listing H. R. Runnels first. Houston would defeat Runnels and would be his last publicly held office. Ed Clark defeated F. R. Lubbock for Lt. Governor. "When Houston refused to take an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy in 1861, the Secession Convention passed an ordinance declaring the governorship vacant and elevating Clark to that position." <I>Handbook of Texas.</B></I> There was also an amendment to the constitution on the ballot.
