ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4 x 6, Bateman's letterhead, October 12, 1903. Handwritten letter regarding his Lanchester automobile, one of the first British-made cars. In part: "I have had a Lanchester car for nearly a year. My experience is that all cars are in a transition state and that everything considered, one car is not much more to be depended upon than another. The Lanchester is a singularly delicate and intricate machine; needing a specially trained driver from the Lanchester works to look after her. On the other hand she is the only car that I know with an adequate luggage-platform and this for station work is invaluable. She is completely noiseless and almost entirely free from vibration. I should recommend a Lanchester for station work and gentle daily runs not exceeding thirty miles in all…So far I have never been stranded away from home through any fault of the engine's though I have been delayed by a punctured tyre--an accident common to all. She is not the type of car that suddenly breaks down." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
