Royal Dragoons Officer's 1834 Pattern Roman Style Heavy Cavalry Helmet

Estimate: $9000 - 14000
This is a rare Officer's Roman style 1834 pattern heavy cavalry helmet circa 1835. The gilt skull and peaks are topped by a high gilt comb bearing carved sprays of acorns and oakleaf. The comb is fitted with a bearskin crest. The side of the skull bears carved gilded oakleaf sprays and scrolls adorn the rear peak. The regimental title scroll surrounds the helmet and bears the inscription "THE ROYAL DRAGOONS". The front peak bears a "ridge" down the center (the Royal Dragoon's helmets were the only ones with this feature). Large flower ear bosses suspend scalloped gilt chin scales. The rayed helmet plate has the Hanovarian coat-of-arms with a unicorn on one side and a lion on the other. The battle honors "PENINSULA" and "WATERLOO" are in a banner underneath the Coat-of-Arms. The brow band is brown leather and the peaks are lined with green skived leather. The helmet comes with a gilded leaping lion finial to be attached when the bearskin is removed.
