Royal Doulton Seriesware Jug Coaching Days 1905
Presented in this lot is a Vintage Royal Doulton "Coaching Days" Seriesware Rocket Jug, inscribed D2416, scene 7: Driver talking to passenger, attendants loading, circa 1905. One of Royal Doulton's most popular seriesware lines remains their Coaching Days series. Introduced in 1905 and finally withdrawn in 1955, earthenware was the typical body but examples can be found on a china body. The series was originally designed by Victor Venner between c.1904-1924, with unknown others contributing designs too. In conceptualising Royal Doulton's seriesware, Art Director Charles Noke, devised a vision for employing a vast number of standard "blank shapes" including plates, vases, trays and jugs and decorating them with a wealth of popular imagery that was drawn from many Literary, Sporting, Geographic, Nostalgic and Historical sources. The premise was never to have items like trios, tea sets or dinner sets "perfectly matching" - but to encourage people to attempt to collect all of the scenes in their chosen pattern. The line became prolific in the 1920's and 1930s and continued for many decades.
This jug is in very nice condition, colours and images are still clear and vibrant without fading. Very slight chip noted at bottom rim edge, no other obvious marring noted. Measures 7.5"H x 4.75"W at bottom, 3.5"W mouth.
