Royal Doulton Prototype Figurine of Saint George and the Dragon
Rare Royal Doulton prototype porcelain figurine depicting Saint George mounted on horseback in the act of slaying the dragon. This early concept version was not intended for general production and is clearly marked beneath the base with printed and hand-applied text: "FOR MARKET RESEARCH - NOT FOR PRODUCTION". The base also bears the Royal Doulton England backstamp and the signature of the designer, Eric J. Griffiths, dated 1977. The highly detailed polychrome glazed composition features a dramatic scene of Saint George in full armor astride a rearing black horse, holding a sword in one hand and gripping the reins in the other. His shield, emblazoned with the red cross of Saint George, is strapped to his back. The horse's caparison is decorated with black fleur-de-lis motifs over a white ground with green, gold, and red borders. At the base lies the slain green dragon with blood pooled beneath its severed head. The sculptural base is modeled to resemble uneven rocky terrain, incorporating a fallen lance, tree stump, and chain. As a prototype piece, this figure displays unique hand-painted characteristics and color selections not finalized for mass release. Such items were typically created for internal evaluation and review during the design and marketing process. The vivid palette and expressive modeling exemplify Royal Doulton's tradition of narrative figural sculpture. The dimensions are approximate.
