This large Royal Doulton character jug depicts Mephistopheles, the cunning and sinister figure from German folklore and the Faust legend. Modeled in striking relief, the jug features two expressive faces"one solemn and one grinning mischievously"each meticulously hand-painted in rich glazes of brown, red, and cream. The underside of the jug bears a poetic verse: When the devil was sick, the devil a saint would be. When the devil got well, devil a saint was he, reflecting Mephistopheles' duplicitous nature. The piece is stamped with the Royal Doulton backstamp. Measures 6"H.
