TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Walt Disney Productions Ltd. letterhead, October 9, 1931. Letter to Charles Lang of Bibo-Lang. In part, “I cannot understand your continued silence…I am in receipt of a letter from Robert Teller, Sons & Dorner…tendering a statement showing a balance of $1,349.22 due for the printing of this Mickey Mouse book. You agreed to make payments to them of some monies…Evidentally you have not been doing this. If you expect to continue doing business with us you must realize that your silence and inattention to the above matter is jeopardizing our cordial relations. I must demand that you make a full account to us of the monies you have received in New York…I also ask of you again for information as to what you are doing with the song, ‘The Wedding Party of Mickey Mouse’ and wish to remind you that you have no license from us to promote this song. Please snap out of it and give this your attention.” In fine condition, with several rusty paperclip and staple marks and light toning. After seeing success in the sales of some Mickey Mouse notebooks in 1928, Walt decided that merchandising was an excellent new way to raise money for the company and gain publicity for his studio’s characters. They began signing licensing agreements, one of the earliest of which was with Bibo and Lang. Over four different printings, the back cover illustration would be also very slightly altered and used on the cover of The Wedding Party of Mickey Mouse sheet music book, to which Roy Disney refers in this letter to the publisher. Superb content showing the earliest merchandising dealings of Disney’s burgeoning empire.
