Roy DeCarava Signed Cover Photo From "Sweet Flypaper of Life". DeCarava was born in Harlem in 1919 and raised by his single mother. A hard worker, he gained admission to The Cooper Union and later attended classes at the Harlem Art Center. His goal was to be an artist and DeCarava worked as a painter and commercial illustrator before settling on photography because of "the directness of the medium." He felt that "black people in America were not viewed as worthy subject matter" for art, but rather were usually "portrayed either in a superficial or a caricatured way or as a problem." Setting out to change that image, he teamed with writer Langston Hughes to create a book about one woman's life in Harlem titled Sweet Flypaper of Life. The photo offered here was used for the cover of this landmark book. It is a silver gelatin print, 14" x 11" in size, and signed on the lower right margin "DeCarava." Matted to 20" x 16" with museum board, this wonderful image is in excellent condition and suitable for display in the finest of homes or galleries.
