Rosemarie Pierer, the Grande Dame of photography, was regarded a pioneer of multi vision in the fifties. At the young age of eight it was her biggest wish to get her own camera. Pierer is known for her photographs that are beautiful in the combination of highest technical standards with artful composition. Depicted here is the Galata Bridge in Istanbul. The bridge spans the Golden Horn, connecting the Istanbul districts Eminönü and Karaköy. Numerous people bustle on the two-story bridge, cars are passing by and ships are landing on the left side. The beautiful skyline of the city appears in the background.



The photograph is verso inscribed in ballpen ‘Türkei’, alike in pencil ‘Instanbul Galatabrücke’ and ‘355’. Verso are two copyright stamps of the photographer. The condition is very good with unremarkable handling creases in the upper right and a slightly nudged lower left corner. The dimensions are 26.8 x 22.8 cm.



Rosemarie Pierer (1918-2012)

The German Photographer Rosemarie Pierer was born in Bernburg, but moved to Hamburg in 1949, where she founded her own studio. The famous photograph and model Inge Schönthal, later Feltrinelli, was trained by the Grande Dame of German photography in the 1950s. Pierer worked for the ‘Thalia-Theater’ and for many different companies, such as Beiersdorf, Deutsche Airbus, Philips, Chamber of Commerce in Hamburg, Maico. In her last years she concentrated again on portrait-photographs, among others Architect Hadi Teherani and former chancellor Helmut Schmidt. (tm)
