The Vulture Mine was discovered in 1863 by Henry Wickenburg, for whom the nearby town was named. The Vulture Mine was the most productive gold mine in Arizona history, producing some 340,000 ounces of gold and 260,000 ounces of silver between 1863 and 1942 [Ref: Arizona Geology, Winter 1989]. Despite the impressive output of the Vulture Mine, Mr. Wickenburg was a very poor man. He eventually took his own life with a Colt revolver, and the Vulture Mine has since been named one of the most haunted areas in the country. This beautiful 3.0 ounce specimen from the Vulture Mine District is approximately 1.5" by 1" by 1.5" thick. - Woodward Collection -59052
