Rose Cleveland: An Uncommon Autograph Letter Rose Cleveland: An Uncommon Autograph Letter
Rose Cleveland: An Uncommon Autograph Letter From the "Executive Mansion." Autograph Letter Signed (in full: "Rose Elizabeth Cleveland"), 2 pages, 4" by 6", on the letterhead of the "Executive Mansion", Washington, November 16, 1888. To Mrs. Horace Goodwin. In excellent condition. Rose Cleveland, the learned spinster sister of the bachelor President Grover Cleveland, served as "First Lady" for little over a year, until her brother married his 21 year-old Ward Frances, in a White House ceremony in 1886. Miss Cleveland was an intellectual and her boredom with social obligations may be inferred from her confession that she occupied herself at state functions by conjugating difficult Greek verbs. This letter, however, is simple: she thanks her correspondent for sending her a photograph of Great-Uncle Charles Cleveland, in which he looks rather like he did when she last saw him. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
