More than the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock also distinguished himself as a master innovator, often seamlessly integrating avant garde technique into classical Hollywood storytelling. In his adaptation of Patrick Hamilton's play, Hitchcock presents the illusion of one 80-minute shot film. Although he actually uses nine different takes by cutting on a zoom to a dark object, the viewer sees all action as continuous and still believes that the action is taking place in real time. The lobby cards feature James Stewart displaying various expressions of consternation as he tries to solve a murder mystery that arises at a dinner party thrown by two of his students. The first three cards each have a small fingerprint or dirt mark, and the fourth card has tape marks in the bottom border. The seventh card has a crease on the left side and a small tear at the bottom. However, the colors remain incredibly vivid on every card, and the set impressively charts one of the most influential films in Hollywood history. Very Fine.
