In full: “Thank you for the birthday card and your note. I am very pleased that you enjoyed my State of the Union address. Nothing makes me feel better than to have your approval. I hope that Myrtle is doing well. Please give her my regards. Nancy and I send our love, and, as always, our prayers are with you too.” In very fine condition. Lydia Hupfer “Hup” MacArthur was the widow of Pete MacArthur, program director of WOC in Davenport, Iowa. In 1932, MacArthur had given a then 21-year-old Reagan his first job as a sports announcer. They would remain friends until her passing at the age of 102 in 1995.
Reagan's first State of the Union address was his first major address following a failed assassination attempt by John Hinckley outside a Washington, D.C. hotel nearly one year to the day before writing this letter. His 1982 speech stressed what would become the Reagan's Administration's policy initiatives, which ultimately ended both the Cold War with the Soviet Union as well as the high inflation and high unemployment of the 1970s. A scarce letter from early in Reagan’s administration. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
