ALS as governor, signed “Ron,” one page, lightly lined, 8.5 x 12, December 18, 1967. Draft letter to "Jack," in full: "It was good to hear from you. Even though I'm aware you still aren't convinced about what we're trying to do in the area of mental health I know you have only the friendliest of motives. The visit to Camarillo was in response to an invitation by the state wide independent mental health group who were holding a board meeting there & asked me to attend. The town of the hospital was incidental to the main purpose. I've given great consideration to the idea you suggested about a surprise visit but honestly have to believe it would be distorted and would result in more ill will not less. Frankly Jack I'm not totally without experience in this area having grown up in a town where one of the nation's biggest hospitals was located. I only say this to suggest that I have some idea of what to look for even if some stage setting is attempted. Recently it was announced in Wash. that Calif. leads the other 49 states in per patient spending & in the percentage of patients who are returned to normal life—admittedly no state can achieve the ideal in this type of program but I think we are making best effort & that our program is not being properly reported by the news media. Give my best to Barbara & Happy Holidays." Governor Reagan's secretary, Cathy Davis, penned the date above Reagan's letter, as well as drew a diagonal line in black ink across the text, indicating she had typed it for his signature. In fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
