Draft ALS signed “RR,” one page, lightly-lined both sides, 8 x 10, June 19, 1967. Letter to a concerned constituent. In part; "More important however is your suggestion that our handling of the tuition & mental health issues publicity wise was ill advised and destructive.…We had no intention of seeing the matter of the V [eteran’s] budget on the front page. Faced with a fiscal crisis we invited the V Administration to what we thought would be a series of meetings to work together on a way to meet the problem of maintaining educational quality & at the same time get their help in meeting our need for economy…The V launched an attack via the press charging us with having a hard & fast position destructive of the V’s goals. This was a totally false & dishonest charge leading to all the uproar that followed and I might add was an eye opener to those of us who had expected better from the so-called intellectual elite.” In fine condition. Immediately upon taking office in 1967, Reagan worked hard to balance the state budget, making cuts and approving tax hikes.
