Brief draft ALS signed “Ron,” one page, 6 x 9, no date. Reagan writes “Tim” regarding a conference at Yellowstone National Park. In full: “I’ll scuttle the state capitol if anything interferes with our making the conference at Yellowstone. This makes a first for the Reagans—we’ve never seen the wonders of the Park.” Reagan has added the postscript: “Then Polly send this on to Sandy for his info. RR.” In fine condition.

Always the outdoorsman and harboring a fondness for national parks, Reagan stays true to form as he relishes the opportunity to attend a conference at Yellowstone—the wonders of which he and his wife never had the good fortune to witness before. It is clear in this correspondence that he wasn’t going to let anything stand in his way, jesting that he would “scuttle the state capitol” lest anything disrupt his agenda. Ironically, some environmentalists questioned Reagan’s commitment to environmental matters when he named James Watt as his interior secretary—a Wyoming attorney who had challenged environmental public land initiatives.
