ALS signed “RR,” one page of memo stationery, 5.5 x 8.5, August 22, 1968. Reagan writes Sabra Holmes of Miami about the direction of the Republican Party just a few days after the GOP nominated Richard Nixon as their candidate in the 1968 presidential election. In part: “Now that the decision has been made we must all work together to see that we have a victory in November. After all, the cause that brings us together is far more important than which individual was chosen to be the standard bearer. I’m sorry we didn’t get to talk horses…Right now I’m sweating out the possibility that my own thoroughbred, a big rangy black born & bred on our place, might have a bowed tendon.” In fine condition, with scattered light creasing.
Who would lead the Republican Party to the White House was in question for part of the year as California Governor Ronald Reagan tried to build on a national following, especially among conservatives—threatening Nixon’s dream of winning the White House. Reagan held a slim lead in the nationwide primary popular vote in his first bid for the presidency, but eventually lost the nomination to Nixon. This correspondence reveals Reagan’s bittersweet feelings, as the two men lacked affection for Nixon, with the latter’s victory a thorn in the governor’s side, evident in the statement, “the cause that brings us together is far more important than which individual was chosen.” But Reagan still stresses that “now that the decision has been made we must all work together to see that we have a victory in November.” That is precisely what happened...with Reagan’s turn in the White House coming 12 years later.
