Romanian Contract Peabody Falling Block Rifle, by Providence Tool Co., Providence, RI, NVSN, 11.4x49R (Romanian Peabody cartridge), 33'' round barrel, walnut stock, surplus U.S. cartouched buttstock and two-ring forend. These rifles were also known as the ''Arma Md 1868''. Amazingly, some of these showed up during the fighting for the Balkans as late as WWI. Approx. 25,000 rifles and 5000 carbines were delivered to the Romanian government in the late 1860s. Condition is fine retaining approx. 85%-90% lightly thinning blue to barrel and bands. Case hardened frame shows very muted colors but having turned mostly silvery gray with mild corrosion. Most screw slots remain straight with the exception of the lever stop screw on left side of frame. Stock with minor sanding and light scuffs, but still clear Civil War era cartouche to left side. Action remains crisp, bore is excellent. Est.: $750-$1,000. (Antique)
