A Roman bronze decorative element in the form of a elephant or pig head, c. 1st - 3rd Century AD, in lovely style the animal's head adorned with incised swirls and loops, raised bands behind and a decorative loop at the top, the snout or trunk ending in a knob. A most attractive and interesting piece which may have served as a lance or spear handle or perhaps a shaft for a wood or leather scabbard. L: 3 3/4 in (9.6cm).
