One sale is a very rare "Roman Oil Lamp" circa 100 A.D. to 300 A.D. This red clay mold, teardrop shaped lamp features a fill hole and a nozzle with remnants of carbon deposit. The outer top portion of the lamp is a decorated with two sets of four circles and two bow designs. Within the raised circular center of the lamp is the god Saturn holding a scythe. Saturn was the Roman god of agriculture and fertility. In the honor of the god Saturn the Romans celebrated the Saturnalia on December 17th by feasting and gift giving. This quality earthenware specimen is in excellent condition.
