Window card blank, 14 x 22, for the documentary Gimme Shelter. The stark reality of the tragic events of December 6, 1969, a low point in rock & roll history as the 1960s came to a close, was captured by the Maysles Brothers in the 1970 documentary Gimme Shelter. Organized by The Rolling Stones and The Grateful Dead, the hastily arranged free concert event at northern California’s Altamont Speedway was doomed from the start with Hells Angels being hired as security. The Grateful Dead declined to take the turn onstage due to the escalating violence. Nearly 300,000 were in attendance and before it was over there were scores of injuries, extensive property damage, and four attendees were dead: one murdered, two by hit-and-run, and one drowned. By eerie coincidence, several fights near the front of the stage broke out during ‘Sympathy for the Devil,’ bringing the concert to a temporary halt. Card is affixed to a slightly larger black sheet. In fine condition, with mild edge toning and some light surface rubbing.
