Rolling Stones Beggar's Banquet Proof (1968). H
Rolling Stones "Beggar's Banquet" Proof (1968). How could this cover scene in a graffiti-filled bathroom not have a story behind it? On the back of this proof, Michael Vosse of Corporate Head Graphics gives us a handwritten account of how the cover came about: He reveals that the location is "the tiny bathroom at a Porsche repair shop above Hollywood Blvd. and Cahuenga." The designers "brought Mick and Keith to the site but did not tell them how vile this bathroom was; there was about an inch and a half of thick dark liquid on the floor ...the boys arrived in velvet suits and expensive Italian shoes and waded into the muck." The front cover having already been photographed, the designers "gave Mick and Keith crayons and felt pens and they wrote the credits and everything else on the back cover ... After the head of Decca saw the design he freaked out, said the cover was disgusting and pornographic, and refused to release it ... The Stones were defiant and held fast for more than a month but any further delay would blow the Christmas release in stores and the Decca chief would not budge -- he was willing to eat the loss -- so the cover was replaced with a hastily thrown-together mock 'dinner invitation.' London Records refused to pay but the Stones paid us in full. And we won Rolling Stone magazine's 'Best Album Cover of the Year,' the only time it's been given to an album cover that was not released." This dye transfer proof is mounted on illustration board, measuring 25 1/2 by 13 1/2 inches. All four corners have dings, and there are some minor tears.
