Gleason with money borrowed from Wenner's family, <I>Rolling Stone</B></I> reported on the music and counterculture of the era, but did so by embracing more traditional journalistic standards rather than the radical politics of the underground press. In the process it become a cultural icon and boosted the careers of such writers as Hunter S. Thompson, Lester Bangs, Ben Fong-Torres, Cameron Crowe, Joe Klein, and even MTV's Kurt Loder.
