Encouraged in his artistic endeavors, Taylor graduated from the Cuero Institute (also known as the Guadalupe Academy or Nash's School, for founder Professor David W. Nash), and went on to study with Robert Jenkins Onderdonk, Jose Arpa, and Theodore Gentilz. He later studied briefly in France, and then with Arthur W. Best in San Francisco, and Frederick Fursman in Michigan.
