Here a decidedly nineteenth century gentleman is clad in fifteenth century armor as he portrays a ninth century warrior. Roland, one of Charlemagne's legendary knights, enjoyed posthumous fame as epic poetry and song embellished his actual deeds. A Defender of the Faith, Roland is credited with thwarting the Islamic conquest of France. Folksy variants of his tale have become localized throughout western Europe. A bold and colorful image evocative of an operatic performance.
