Tenor considered the first African American male concert artist to receive wide international acclaim. Three items: a one-page ALS, 7.25 x 10.5, on his personal letterhead. Hayes responds to an admirer’s request. In part: “I did not forget your kind Christmas card and your wish for me to sign the enclosed programs; it is just that I have been very busy and travelling [sic] a lot.”; a two-page program for a 1965 performance at Jordan Hall in Boston, signed and inscribed on the front in black fountain pen, “For Mrs. Mary A. Smith with all good wishes from Roland Hayes - 2.8.66”; and a two-page program for a 1955 performance at Boston’s Symphony Hall, signed and inscribed on the front in black fountain pen with a similar sentiment. In overall very good condition, with vertical crease passing through Hayes’ image on the program.
