Roland Giguère (1929–2003)

Poet, Painter, Printmaker, and Publisher

Roland Giguère was a multifaceted Canadian artist whose work seamlessly blended poetry and visual art, leaving an indelible mark on Quebec's cultural landscape. Born in Montreal in 1929, Giguère studied typography, engraving, and lithography at the École des Arts Graphiques de Montréal. In 1949, he founded Éditions Erta, a publishing house dedicated to artist books that integrated text and image, reflecting his belief in the unity of verbal and visual expression

Giguère's artistic journey was deeply influenced by Surrealism. During his time in Paris from 1957 to 1963, he connected with André Breton and joined the Phases group, aligning with avant-garde movements that emphasized spontaneity and the subconscious. His visual works often featured bold lines and abstract forms, mirroring the themes explored in his poetry.

Throughout his career, Giguère received numerous accolades, including the Prix France-Québec, the Prix Paul-Émile-Borduas in 1982 for his contributions to visual arts, and the Prix Athanase-David in 1999 for his literary achievements. Notably, he declined the Governor General's Award in 1973 for political reasons, underscoring his commitment to his principles.

Giguère's legacy endures through his innovative fusion of literature and visual art, making his works highly sought after by collectors and institutions alike. His pieces are featured in major collections, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal.
