Newspaper editor and fiery secessionist orator (1828–1919) who served as a general in the Civil War. Manuscript DS, signed “Roger A. Pryor,” one page, 7.5 x 5, December 2, 1862. Document, titled, “General Orders No. 1,” reads, in full: “In compliance with orders from Major General French, the undersigned assumes command of the forces on, and in the vicinity of the Blackwater River.” Document has been encapsulated in Mylar. In very good condition, with two vertical folds, one through a single letter of signature, uniform toning, paper loss to right edge, and a few creases.
