Baseball questionnaire, one page, 8.5 x 11, on the letterhead of baseball historian and statistician Karl Wingler, that was submitted to and completed by Roger Maris in his own hand during December, 1957. There is the one-page transmittal letter/questionnaire which has been filled out and signed by Maris in blue ballpoint, along with a carbon of the original letter with Patricia Carvell (Maris' wife) printed in blue ink. Also included are two unlined 4.5 x 3 cards that Maris has completed; one regarding the schools he attended and the other concerning his parents, his nationality, and the scout who originally signed him to a professional baseball contract. Finally, there is the envelope, postmarked December 21, 1957 from Fargo, North Dakota, that Maris used to return the questionnaire to Wingler. In fine overall condition, with staple holes to top of questionnaire. Maris had just finished his first season with the Cleveland Indians—and his first in the big leagues—when Wingler solicited this biographical information. Interestingly, Maris dismissed a request to explain why, in 1955, he changed the spelling of his family name from ‘Maras’ to ‘Maris’ as being “immaterial.” At the time, of course, no one knew that Maris would team with Mickey Mantle in 1961 for an unforgettable season of baseball...and baseball immortality. An unusual collectible from a one-time home run king.
