Two items: a TLS signed by Richard Rodgers, "Dick," and Oscar Hammerstein II, "and Oscar," one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, April 6, 1956, to Herman Axelrod, in full: "You were swell the other night and the ham came out in you just as of old. Thank you for taking part in the program"; and a hardcover edition of Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, published by Simon & Schuster in 1949, signed and inscribed on the first free end page in ballpoint by Hammerstein, "For Ax, with love and undying gratitude for helping me write this book—Os." Also includes a letter to Axelrod by Frederick Ellison Lane, thanking him for remarks given at the Alexander Hamilton Dinner in honor of Rodgers and Hammerstein, as well as a piece of scrap paper with brief handwritten notes in pencil, evidently Axelrod's crib notes for remarks given at the dinner. In overall fine condition. Axelrod had been a classmate of Hammerstein's at Columbia University, where they worked on the annual Varsity Show together.
