Scottish geologist (1792–1871) who was the first to investigate the Silurian system. ALS signed “Rod. I. Murchison,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.5 x 9.5, July 19, 1833. Handwritten letter to botanist John Lindley, referring to the important Scottish botanist and pioneer of microscopy Robert Brown, who observed what is now known as 'Brownian motion' in 1827, and named the cell nucleus in 1833. In part: "I cannot pretend to give you from my very imperfect recollection of the little something which jarred slightly upon my ear as possibly affecting the botanical reputation of Robert Brown, any specific advice…you put the case in such a manner as if it appeared that the said Robert Brown did not show true cause for the effects he had spoken of—I leave this…to your good judgment." In fine condition, with creasing to corners and a seal-related tear.
