A few months prior to his marriage to Renée Honta in October 1933, O’Conor
purchased a large maison (built in 1870 by a wealthy vintner) in the town of
Nueil-sur-Layon, on the banks of the Loire. Benington records that this work is
one of only a couple of paintings which can definitely be identified as being
painted in Nueil-sur-Layon, and dates the work to circa 1934-1935.
