Plate: "Legends and Lessons", Rock Newcomb. Verso: [label affixed to backing] National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, Prix de West Invitational, Title: "legends and Lessons", Artist: Rock Newcomb, Size: 16" x 20", Medium: Acrylic; [handwritten on back of panel] This painting features a Navajo wedding basket, an Acoma olla, grapes and gourds. The basket design is viewed by Navajos as a map by which to chart their lives. It represents origination, birth, darkness, struggle, pain, marriage, enlightenment, the spirit world and a pathway to the light. During ceremonies the pathway line is always pointed east. The last coil on the basket rim is finished off at the pathway to allow the medicine man to easily locate it in the darkness. The modern Acoma olla features designs known as "old style" because of the macaws and rainbow. These motifs came into prominent use in the 1880s. Macaws, traded from as far as Guatamala (sic) since at least the 1100s, were desired for their colorful feathers, used for ceremonies, prayer sticks and personal adornment. The rainbow pattern is an appeal/prayer for moisture. Grapes were grown by Franciscan priests in New Mexico as early as 1598 for use in sacramental wines. The gourds are indicative of one of the many varities (sic) of crops grown by early Native Americans as well as later colonial Spaniards.; "Legends and Lessons", original acrylic painting, Rock Newcomb ©
