This Robinson Ransbottom cream and brown ceramic bean pot with lid is part of a long tradition of pottery making in Ohio. In fact, the American porcelain industry can be traced to its roots in southcentral and southeastern Ohio, where the indigenous clay, natural gas, and transportation routes supported the growth and upsurgence of the American ceramics industry.<p>

Although this was very important due to the need for America to reduce its reliance on European porcelain and realize its own artistry, the American porcelain and ceramics industry had a practical side in producing stoneware such as this bean pot. This bean pot represents the type of stoneware made by companies such as Zanesville Stoneware and Red Wing Pottery which were necessary for the preservation and transport of perishable goods through the 19th to the early 20th century.<p>

The Robinson Ransbottom Pottery of Roseville, Ohio was founded by Frank Ransbottom in 1900 and remains in production today. Frank came to the pottery business honestly. His brothers were associated with Roseville Pottery and Frank was schooled in pottery by his father Alfred, who operated the Bluebird Potteries in southcentral Ohio. By the 1890s, Frank Ransbottom had become a well known and successful jobber of stoneware in the area.<p>

Frank and some of his brothers acquired the former Oval Ware and Brick Company in 1900 and began production of jardinieres, cuspidors, and red clay flower pots the following year. Renamed the Ransbottom ...
